In one very fine lesson presented during the lectureship this morning the scripture passage of Mark 4:20 was used to illustrate numerical growth in the church. The passage reads (ESV) But those that were sown on the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold." Is Mark 4:20 within its context properly applied to an example of numerical growth in the Body of Christ?
Though this text seems to be used in this application by many does it really infer numerical growth?
In the verses prior to verse 20 verses 15-19 of Mark chapter 4 Jesus explained several hindrances that would cause retardation of one’s personal growth in bearing fruit from the engrafted word of God in the human heart like lack of love for the truth, lack of longsuffering, and lack of faith being borne out in the heart. Where is the connection that this verse has an application toward illustrating numerical growth in the church except on an individual level?
